WOW! A New Technology Allows The Blind To "see" Pictures

The Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR) in Winnipeg, is the first museum in the world to use a new technology that allows visitors to "see" pictures with the fingertips.

The Museum has used its new exhibition entitled "Beyond The Look", featuring 100 works created by blind photographers, to bring the new technology to the test.

Visitors to the Museum are invited to admire the photographs with their eyes, but also three-dimensional and tactile versions of these works. touch activated sensors also provide audio information on the images.

Tara Miller, a photographer who has only 6% of his sight in one eye, hopes that this new technology will allow blind people to discover a new dimension of his works.

"The fact that the artist is not able to see does not mean that it is not able to create a visual work," says Miller.

"I did not need my view, as I have vision." - Tara Miller, blind photographer

For the director of exhibitions and digital media CMHR Corey Timpson, this exhibition not only enables blind people to see images; it also allows blind people to see beyond stereotypes.

"...It is an exhibition for all. "
